Dragon and ClaroRead

This document is a guide for users who wish to use ClaroRead with
Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The software features and commands
described in this document are for ClaroRead Plus
V5 and Dragon
NaturallySpeaking version10.
For a full description of how to use ClaroRead or Dragon
NaturallySpeaking, please refer to the documentation of the
relevant product.
Creating a new Dragon User

ClaroRead can assist with the creation of a new Dragon user during the Audio
Setup

Wizard and the New User Wizard. If you have difficulty reading any of the text in the

Wizard windows, you can either have claroRead speak all the text; or have ClaroRead
Speak individual words which are causing you difficulty.

To speak the entire text

Enable the Speak Under Mouse All option in the Advanced Speech Settings dialog of

ClaroRead. ClaroRead will now speak any text you point your mouse pointer at.

To speak individual words

Enable the Speak word on Ctrl + hover in the ClaroRead Speech Settings. claroRead will

now speak any single word when you point your mouse pointer at it and press the Ctrl key.
you can use a combination of these two methods to have all of the text spoken to you
initially, and then use the Ctrl key to speak individual words that you need to hear again.

Notes

In the Volume Check and Quality Check steps of the New User Wizard, it does

not matter what the Dragon user says into the microphone. The text on screen

is just there as a prompt. You can say anything at this stage, as long as you

speak in your normal voice until the beep is heard.

ClaroRead will speak the text in the Audio Setup Wizard before you have

clicked on the Start Volume Check or the Start Quality Check buttons i.e. when

the text is still greyed out.

ClaroRead cannot be used to speak the training text into the microphone, and

therefore bypass the new user training process. The talking must be done by

the new Dragon user themselves. ClaroRead is used only as an aid to help the

user read any words that they might otherwise have difficulty with.

The ClaroRead voice can interfere with the training process if the volume is set

too high. Best results are obtained if the sound output of the computer is

directed to the headset rather than the computer speakers. This prevents the

microphone picking up any speech from the ClaroRead software. (To set the

sound playback device, see your Sound properties in the Windows Control Panel)

Correcting Dictated Text

Once training is complete, the most important part of using Dragon is to ensure that
you correct any dictation errors. ClaroRead can help you do this in several ways.

1. Echo voice input

Claro Read Plus has an option to Echo Dragon voice input, which can be found in the

Advanced Speech Settings and is enabled by default. This is an extremely useful

feature to help to identify when Dragon makes a transcription error. The dictated text is

echoed back to you from the Dragon Results Box whenever you pause in your dictation.

ClaroRead will continue to speak the dictation back until it is interrupted. It can be

interrupted by:

􀁳􀀀

Pressing the Ctrl key (this key always silences ClaroRead’s speech).

Clicking with the mouse, or pressing any key on the keyboard. (The

safest keystroke to stop the speech without altering the content of your

document is to use the Ctrl key.)

􀁳􀀀

Continuing to dictate. We have already identified that dictated text is spoken by

ClaroRead only when you pause in your dictation, so you can continue to dictate

the next part of your text while ClaroRead speaks the previously dictated phrase to
you

However, if you finish dictating the second phrase before ClaroRead has

finished speaking your first phrase, ClaroRead will stop speaking the first phrase, and

start speaking your second phrase.

eg. If you dictate “ the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” , then pause, then say

“ full-stop” and pause again; ClaroRead may not have time to finish speaking all of the

first long phrase before it speaks the word “ full-stop” .

The extent to which ClaroRead is able to keep up with your rate of speech can be

adjusted by altering the speed of ClaroRead’s voice (set the Voice Speed in the
Settings dialog)or by waiting for ClaroRead to finish speaking before you resume your dictation.

2. Corrections

When the Dragon Correction Menu is displayed, you can use the ClaroRead featureSpeak word on Ctr

l + hover to speak individual words from the alternative choices list.

This can also be used in the Spell dialog to speak the alternatives displayed there.

Notes

􀁳􀀀
ClaroRead will echo characters typed into the Dragon Spell dialog when the

Advanced Speech Settings Characters is enabled. However, you must prefix
each character with the word ‘press’. So if you say press a, ClaroRead will
echo ‘a’. But if you just say a, ClaroRead will not echo it.

􀁳􀀀
The ClaroRead feature Echo Dragon voice input will only echo dictation,

not Dragon commands.
Reading Microsoft Word Documents

1. Speak from cursor

Position your cursor where you want ClaroRead to start speaking. Say “press function

seven” . The F7 key is the shortcut key for the ClaroRead Play button. To stop playback,

you can say either “press function eight ” (which is the shortcut key for the ClaroRead

Stop button); or you
can say “press control. A full list of the other ClaroRead shortcut
keys can be found in the ClaroRead help file, in the section Keyboard Control.
If the ClaroRead option Stop after sentence is turned on, the speech will stop at the end

of the sentence. To override this, you can select the text you want ClaroRead to speak
first. For example, position you cursor in the paragraph you wish to have spoken; say
select paragraph”; and finally say “press function seven” . ClaroRead will now continue

speaking to the end of the selected text unless you interrupt it. (Note: The ClaroRead
Advan
ced Speech Settings Speak when mouse selects will not speak when text is selected
by a Dragon vo
ice command, it only speaks text which is selected using the mouse.)

2. Speak as you navigate

When the ClaroRead option Cursor moves is enabled on the Advanced Speech

settings window, ClaroRead will automatically speak text as you navigate around your

document.
If you say... ClaroRead speaks...
“move up

/down <1-20> ” the line of text that the cursor moves to
“press control right arrow” the next word in the document

“press control left arrow” the previous word in the document

Reading Other Documents

You can have ClaroRead speak the content of other (non-Microsoft word) documents by

utilising the clipboard. If you are not in a Microsoft Word document, when you use the
Speak feature of
ClaroRead, it will speak text currently in the clipboard.

First, select the text that you want ClaroRead to speak: For example in DragonPad you
can say “select paragraph” or “select all. To copy the selected text to the clipboard say
“copy that ” . Finally, have ClaroRead speak the text by saying “press function seven” .

With the ClaroRead Advanced Speech Settings Speak when mouse selects enabled,

ClaroRead will speak text as soon as it is selected providing you select it with your

mouse. ClaroRead will not automatically speak text which is selected using a Dragon
voce command.
Reading Web Pages

to you

Mouse - IE/Firefox. When enabled, this setting will have ClaroRead speak any HTML

element over which the mouse pointer moves.
Note: the amount of text
spoken will be determined by the construction of the web
page
, as ClaroRead will speak only single HTML elements.

By positioning the mouse pointer at the top of the text you wish to have spoken and

saying “move mouse down very slow” ClaroRead will speak any text which passes
under the mouse pointer. (This may be effected by how the HTML is broken into

different elements by the page author.) You should experiment with different mouse

speeds depending on the web page being viewed to ensure that ClaroRead has finished

speaking all of the text before the mouse moves to the next section. Adjust the speed

of the mouse once it is moving by saying “ faster” , “much faster” , slower” or “much
slower” . Stop the mouse by saying “stop” or “ cancel.

Notes
mouse at the speed defined in the Dragon Options dialog. (Commands

tap-page;Speed... button) The default setting for the mouse speed is

2, which should be slow enough for most web pages. For the mouse

movement commands to work in Dragon, they must be enabled. (See the

Dragon Options dialog, Commands tab- page, Enable mouse motion

commands checkbox.)

re-position your mouse pointer when you’ve scrolled the webpage or

moved to a new page. You
can say cancel” at any time to remove the grid

and
leave the mouse pointer where it is within the grid.

What is ‘that’?

When you u
se Dragon NaturallySpeaking, there are many different commands which

include the word ‘that’. For example “ correct that ” , “delete that ” .

Using the Echo Dragon voice input feature of ClaroRead helps you to identify exactly

what Dragon will interpret as ‘that’. When no text is selected, the word ‘that’ refers to

the last thing you dictated. Sometimes users are not sure exactly which word (or words)

this is, as it is determined by how you pause in your dictation. However, with ClaroRead

you will always know - as it will be the last thing ClaroRead echoed back to you.

Operating ClaroRead Hands-Free

To start ClaroRead with Dragon NaturallySpeaking already running, say “start ClaroRead

Plus 5” . Or, if you’ve renamed your ClaroRead icon, you should say “start ” quickly

followed by the name you’ve given it.

To make a Microsoft Word document speak, position your cursor at the point you want

to start and say “press function seven” . To stop the speech at any time say “press

function eight ” or “press control. Alternatively, to speak a single sentence, position the

cursor at the beginning of the sentence and say “press shift function seven” .

In a Microsoft Word document, to have ClaroRead highlight the homophones, select the

text (e.g. say “select all”) and then say “press function ten” . To clear the homophone

highlighting say “press function eleven” .
